Alat Ukur DISC untuk Memahami Karakter Siswa

Pendahuluan
Karakter ibarat emas yang tersimpan dalam diri manusia. Setiap manusia memiliki emas didalam dirinya. Sering dengan berjalannya waktu emas tersebut perlahan-lahan tertutupi oleh lumpur. Lumpur ini merupakan peristiwa atau hal-hal yang membatasi diri untuk menjadi lebih baik. Layaknya emas yang banyak dicari dan ditemukan, penemuan dalam diri kita sendiri harus diawali dari kerendahan hati, mengakui, menerima dan memanfaatkannya. Mengetahui diri mengajari kita tentang jarak , seberapa jauh atau dekat kita sebaiknya menjaga jarak dengan orang lain. Mengetahui diri adalah soal sikap. Pengetahuan yang tinggi hanya bisa bernilai moral ketika hal itu diwujudkan. Mengetahui diri bukan tujuan tapi merupakan sarana, tujuan sebenarnya ialah mampu menguasai diri agar bisa melayani sesama secara maksimal.
Pribadi dibentuk dari bahan mentah yang unik dan tiada duanya. Siswa tidak bisa menemukan dirinya pada orang lain. Mengenal karakter adalah berakrab-akrab dengan kekuatan dan kelemahan diri kita. Orang lebih memusatkan perhatian pada kelemahan disbanding dengan kekuatannya.
1. Sejarah DISC
Menurut Yunani kuno, kepribadian merupakan bagian integral dari kesehatan seseorang. Mereka percaya bahwa tubuh mempunyai empat cairan utama yang didasarkan pada empat elemen yaitu api, udara, air dan tanah. Jika salah satu elemen ini dominan terhadap yang lainnya, diperkirakan akan mempengaruhi kepribadian dan mood seseorang.
Keempat cairan, darah, empedu kuning, lendir dan empedu hitam, masing-masing dipercaya berkaitan erat dengan tipe kepribadian yang berbeda. Kelebihan unsur darah (blood) membuat orang cenderung sanguin, empedu kuning (yellow bile) mehasilkan kepribadian kolerik, lendir (phlegm) menghasilkan flegmatik dan empedu hitam (black bile) berhubungan dengan melankolik Teori ini pertama kali disusun secara sistematik oleh Hippocrates, dan bertahan hingga abad pertengahan. Kita mengetahuinya sekarang tentu saja bahwa teori tersebut tidak berdasarkan fakta medis, akan tetapi yang mereka lakukan adalah upaya pertama kali yang dilakukan secara sistematis untuk mendiskripsikan tipe-tipe kepribadian. Sampai sekarang kata-kata “sanguine”, “phlegmatic”, “choleric” dan “melancholic” masih sangat sering digunakan.
Pada tahun 1921, Carl G. Jung mulai memperkenalkan empat tipe yang berorientasi pada fungsi psikologi yaitu Sensing, Intuitive, Feeling dan Thinking. Selain itu Jung mempopularkan teori kerpibadian menjadi dua Divisi Ekstrovert dan Intovert .Kemudian Teori ini dikembangkan dan di eksplorasi oleh Kathrine Cook Briggs dan putrinya Isabel Briggs Myers menjadi sebuah alat ukur psikometrik yang sekarang dikenal sebagai MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator).
Awal tahun 1920 an, psikolog Amerika bernama William Moulton Marston mengembangkan satu teori untuk menjelaskan respon emosional orang. Sampai saat itu, penelitiannya terutama dibatasi pada mereka yang berpenyakit mental atau penjahat, dan Marston ingin memperluas idenya untuk mengungkap kepribadian orang-orang normal.
Untuk menguji teorinya, Marton membutuhkan beberapa cara untuk mengukur kepribadian yang akan dideskripsikan. Solusinya dalam mengembangkan pengukuran kepribadian menggunakan empat faktor kepribadian yang penting, yaitu : Dominance, Influence, Steadiness dan Compliance, yang kemudian disebut dengan teori DISC.
Pada tahun 1928, Marston mempublikasikan temuannya dalam sebuah buku The Emotions of Normal People, yang memuat deskripsi singkat tentang alat ukur kepribadian yang dikembangkannya. Disusul tahun 1931 bersama Istrinya Elizabeth Marston dan Psikolog C. Daily King, Marston Menerbitkan buku keduanya Integrative. Diawali oleh upaya inilah test DISC dikembangkan. Marston tidak mengembangkan instrument tetapi merupakan peletak fondasi dari pembuatan kuesioner yang digunakan sebagai alat untuk mengidentifikasi tipe orang, Pada masa kini, kuesioner telah lebih disempurnakan oleh para ahli psikologi modern dan bahkan dengan menggunakan komputer analisis atas kuosioner tersebut dapat dihasilkan dengan lebih cepat.
2. Pengertian DISC
DISC merupakan suatu alat yang digunakan untuk memetakan perilaku manusia ke dalam empat tipe yaitu Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, dan Caution. Model ini didasarkan pada pemikiran bahwa setiap manusia memiliki perilaku bawaan dari orang tua (keturunan) dan keteladanan yang diberikan terutama pada pola asuh yang diberikan. Seiring dengan pertumbuhannya seseorang akan dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan dan komunitas terdekat yang akan membentuk respon perilaku sehingga mampu beradaptasi dengan masyarakat dan lingkungan yang lebih luas. Penjelasan mengenai keempat tipe adalah sebagai berikut :
1. Dominance (D) mengukur bagaimana seseorang bereaksi terhadap masalah dan tantangan. Seseorang yang memiliki ”D” tinggi akan bereaksi dominant, decisive, langsung, demanding, dan cendrung ingin selalu mengambil alih. Sedangkan yang memiliki ”D” rendah cenderung tidak mampu mengambil keputusan cepat ( undecisive), dan tidak menyukai tantangan. Tipe Dominance adalah tipe yang terfokus pada pencapaian tujuan (goal oriented) dengan mengunakan kekuasaan dan otoritas yang dimiliki. Tipe ”D” adalah tipe yang aktif dalam mengubah lingkungan sebagai inisiator yang dominan. Kekuatannya terletak kemampuan dalam mengambil keputusan secara cepat dan langsung. Kelemahannya adalah tidak memiliki kesabaran, kurang hati-hati dan cenderung sebagai penuntut.
2. Influence (I) mengukur bagaimana seseorang bereaksi terhadap untuk mempengaruhi orang lain. Seseorang yang memiliki ”I” tinggi akan bereaksi menginspirasi, impulsif, dan impresif, Sedangkan yang memiliki ”I” rendah cendrung berkomunikasi dengan bahasa non verbal (mimik muka), dan pendiam. Tipe influence adalah tipe yang mudah bergaul dan berkomunikasi dengan dengan orang lain, sehingga yang menjadi orientasinya adalah people dan relationship. Kekuatan tipe ”I” terletak pada pribadi yang optimis, anthusias dalam mengerjakan dan menjalankan pekerjannnya. Tujuannya adalah untuk mendapatkan pengakuan sosial dari lingkungannya. Kelemahan dari tipe influence terkadang kurang serius dalam mengerjakan sesuatu, cenderung menyepelekan, dan menaruh curiga terhadap lingkungannya.
3. Steadiness (S ) mengukur bagaimana seseorang bereaksi terhadap lingkungan sekitarnya. Seseorang yang memiliki ”S” tinggi akan stabil, zona nyaman, patuh dan mendukung. Sedangkan yang memiliki ”S” rendah akan labil, dan menyukai perubahan yang cepat. Tipe Steadiness adalah tipe yang sama dengan tipe influence yang lebih berorientasi pada peole dan relationship. Kekuatan dari tipe ini adalah kemampuan dalam diplomasi, piawai bekerja dalam tim, memiliki loyalitas yang tinggi, supportif, dan cepat dalam melayani orang lain. Kelemahannya nya terletak pada pribadi yang kurang aktif, sembrono, kurang waspada, dan tidak memiliki hasrat yang tinggi. Hal yang paling ditakuti oleh tipe ”S” ini adalah perubahan lingkungan dan ketidakpastian dalam menjalankan pekerjaannya.
4. Caution (C) atau Conscientious mengukur bagaimana seseorang bereaksi terhadap peraturan dan prosedur yang dibuat. Seseorang yang memiliki ”C” tinggi percaya peraturan dibuat untuk dilaksanakan, konsisten, hati-hati, dan teliti. Sedangkan yang memiliki ”C” rendah cendrung beranggap peraturan dibuat untuk dilanggar, selalu mencari kebebasan, dan tidak menyukai detail. Tipe Caution adalah tipe yang dapat bekerja dengan menggunakan aturan baku atau memiliki Standar Operating Prosedur (SOP). Orientasinya dalam menjalankan pekerjaan adalah result dan task sama halnya dengan tipe ”D” yang memiki standar yang tinggi untuk hasil yang diberikan. Kehati-hatian, teliti, cermat, akurat, dan memiliki intuisi yang baik menjadi kekuatan dari tipe ”C” ini. Kelemahannya pada sikap yang terlalu kaku, keras kepala, sulit diatur, sehingga karena terlalu perfeksionis menyebabkan frustasi ketika hasil yang diharapkan tidak menjadi kenyatan(Syumanjaya,2013;Nofiar,2009;Shin,2013; Dwikardana,2007; Adhe,2010).
3. Memanfaatkan Hasil DISC
Pada dasarnya, DISC mengukur empat faktor perilaku seseorang, yaitu: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness dan Compliance. Ini merupakan suatu konstruksi yang cukup kompleks, dan tidak mudah digambarkan dengan satu kata saja, tetapi dapat dikelompokkan sebagai unsur ketegasan (assertiveness), komunikasi (communication), kesabaran (patience) dan struktur (structure).
Dengan DISC dapat Membantu untuk lebih mengenal diri sendiri, lebih fokus pada wilayah pengembangan diri, memahami orang lain dan menyesuaikan diri dengan berbagai macam tipe kepribadian orang dan untuk lebih percaya diri. DISC juga berguna agar seseorang mampu memetakan wilayah masalah, akar konflik, dan tingkat stress (dari dalam diri atau disebabkan oleh lingkungan) secara akurat dan mendeteksi sebab konflik utama dalam hubungan pasangan.
Keterbatasan utama DISC adalah tidak dapat memberikan gambaran keterampilan (skills) dan tingkat pengetahuan (knowledge) seseorang. Contoh, alat ini dapat menyimpulkan bahwa seseorang akan sangat cocok secara perilaku dan tempramen sebagai akuntan, akan tetapi tidak dapat menilai apakah orang itu memiliki keterampilan yang cukup untuk menjalankan peran atau tugasnya dengan baik.
Hasil DISC dapat digunakan oleh Guru Bimbingan dan Konseling sebagai :
1. Alat bantu agar siswa dapat mengenali dirinya dan orang lain, memahami setiap siswa unik dan berbeda. Berbicara bahasa mereka dengan bahasa yang mereka mengerti.
2. Sarana untuk membangun komitmen dan kerja sama antara siswa, individu cenderung lebih mudah percaya dan mudah bekerjasama dengan orang yang cenderung “mirip” dengan mereka.baik dari segi karakteristik ataupun gaya komunikasinya.
3. Salah satu cara untuk menyelesaikan dan mencegah konflik, dengan memahami kesamaan dan perbedaan setiap individu kita bisa menyelesaikan banyak persoalan sebelum meledak.
Mengenali diri sendiri sebelum mengenali orang lain adalah sebuah pertayaan yang bijaksana. Dengan mengenali diri sendiri maka terbuka lebar jalan perbaikan dan pengembangan diri. Karakter jauh lebi indah dari apapun yang ada didunia ini. Biarkan karakter bersinar seperti emas dan mulai belajar untuk mensyukuri hal-hal yang kecil dan yang sederhana seperti yang sudah kita miliki.
Guru Bimbingan dan Konseling dapat memanfaatkan hasil DISC untuk membantu siswa agar memahami tipenya sebagai dasar pemahaman diri dan gaya komunikasi sehingga mampu membangu rapport dengan cepat .Menerima dengan memahami setiap diri kita unik dan berbeda dengan memahami segala kekuatan dan menerima keterbatasan sehingga menumbuhkan rasa syukur.Menyesuaikan proses peningkatan diri untuk menjadi orang yang lebih baik dengan mengembangkan diri secara terus menerus dan saling mendukung satu dengan lainnya, belajar memperbaiki keterbatasan diri terus beradaptasi dengan lingkungan dengan banyak berlatih dan tekun.
